Chapter Twenty-Two

Nate was on the phone out in the hall while Brodie sat next to Molly’s bed. She looked good considering a freaking war had pretty much broken out all around her over the last few hours. Nate listened to the voice on the phone while he stared at the man who had captivated him since the moment he had laid eyes on him: Brodie Jackson.

“Sir? Yes, sir. That’s correct, sir. The CPX-351 trial. Molly Jackson, Sir. I’m looking at the drug right now, Sir.”

Nate’s heart began to pound as the voice on the phone began to tell him that they had no record of a Molly Jackson being a part of the trial and that there wasn’t any room in the program for anyone new.

“But, but, but, she’s been doing great on it, Sir,” he mumbled.

Suddenly a hand appeared in front of Nate’s face and he looked up to see Logan Hunt standing in front of him. He handed his phone to Logan.

“This is Special Agent in Charge Logan Hunt of the FBI, who am I speaking with?”

Logan listened for a moment. “Uh-huh, okay, Major Harrison, I understand your dilemma, but let me tell you where I’m coming from. I’m standing here with Dr. Wyatt Parker who is on the Board of Directors at Bethesda, have you heard of him? You have? Good. Well he and I both want this young woman to continue on this treatment that she has somehow been getting. Maybe she was listed under another name, I don’t know, but either way, she will be continuing with her treatment, am I clear, Major Harrison?”

Logan nodded a few times, “Uh huh, oh, you did find an opening? That’s excellent work, Major, excellent work,” he said as he motioned to Nate for a pen and paper, “Her case file number?” he said as he began writing down the information, “uh-huh, okay, perfect. I’ll arrange for a chopper to fly her up there later this afternoon. Thank you, Major.”

He ended the call and handed the phone back to Nate. “Thanks,” Nate mumbled.

Logan grunted a ‘harrumph,’ as a response then snapped at another man walking with him, “Bring Brodie to the cabin for a fucking debrief,” before he started to stomp off.

“Wait, what? I thought I was….”

Logan stopped and spun around, “You thought you were what, Fisher?”

Nate glanced in at Brodie, “I just, we just had a connection, Sir. I thought it might be more productive if I did the debriefing.”

“Oh, you mean the fact the Brodie and I have fucked isn’t a good enough connection?” Logan said with a wicked grin.

Jesus. Knife. Heart. Yeah.

“What?” Nate somehow managed to say.

“Oh yeah, Fisher. I’ve had him. And your precious Ranger, whom you treated like shit and threw away like yesterday’s garbage.”

“Logan,” Ranger’s voice said from the end of the hall and it was like it sucked all of the air out of the room. Logan stumbled and his back hitting the wall was the only thing keeping him upright as he stared at Ranger.
